Our Core Values
Why Church? This is a great question. In a lot of ways, we, as a society, seem to be moving past religion. Religion so often shuts down questions and offers simple platitudes, petty moralisms, and easy answers to some of life's biggest questions. The certainty and self-righteousness of religion have proven more harmful than worthy. Is church a thing of the past, then? Should it be? What place does it have in a society in which we have seen such profound advancements in science, technology, and human knowing? Isolation and a longing for purpose. Exploring mystery and purpose in the presence of a loving community.
Unlike many churches, we don’t want to micromanage what YOU believe.
One of our greatest strengths as a church family is our commitment to an authentic, open dialogue about faith. We have thoughtful, diverse people here who are willing to engage their faith --as well as their doubt-- in open conversation. This happens everywhere: from the pulpit, to the hallways, to our book and bible studies, all the way out to the local bars where we hold our pub theology.
Our church respects and values the fact that we all come to faith questions with our own history and viewpoints.
Also, we are a Christian church in the United Methodist tradition -- a tradition, by the way, where open-minded inquiry and diversity of belief is a value. This is a tradition we love and uphold so the stories of the Bible create a foundation for us to anchor our conversation.
Yes, the Bible is complex and old and sometimes confusing (we think so anyway), but like so much in life, context helps and so does community. And that's what we're here for: to provide a community to help us all make sense of life, and to create a space to point us toward love and justice and serving others and making our world a better place.
If you are looking for a church family that is deeply rooted in the ancient wisdom and love of the Christian faith, but that also seeks to humbly and graciously pursue that commitment, come give us a try!
